the Master of The Hartland
The Hartland is a great English style pub about a half an hour walk away from my apartment. Richard, Bob, Tomoko and I go there often. The owner of The Hartland, Shinji, is a really interesting guy. He’s a former graphic designer, he used to race 400 cc motorcycles (he’s an F1 enthusiast too, as you might suspect), and his wife made all of the furniture in the bar (she spent a year or so in England as a furniture-maker’s apprentice and now makes brilliant Arts and Crafts style furniture). Tonight I went down to The Hartland to meet my language partner, but she didn’t show so I just had a Guinness and some fish and chips and some good conversation with the Master (male proprietors of small shops are, indeed, referred to as “Master” in Japan).
