Groundhog Day

25Jun07

After an extended hiatus from posting, I’ve finally decided to re-emerge, but wearing a slightly different form. No longer will this page in any way resemble an attempt to clock or categorize the events in my life based on any kind of chronotopic model. The diaristic method of posting was starting to feel like punching a time card and events themselves, instead of being enjoyable instances, started to become nagging bundles, always hovering over my shoulder and chanting “Don’t forget to post us! Don’t forget to post us!”

From now on expect my posting to be more regular, but also more occasional. This might seem like a contradiction at first, but actually I’m trying to emphasize an older sense of the word ‘occasional’ here — not as in “from time to time,” but as in “at the time of an occasion.” I’d like to think of my new postings as miniature occasions, each one containing it’s own raison d’être, whether that be an act of thinking, the reportage of a particularly striking occurrence, a memoiristic recounting, or simply the reproduction of a set of beautiful photographs. But certainly the drive to record every event (the desperate smell of the accountant of lifestyle experiences) will no longer be a force that defines the Notebook.
