homage to lonely, part 2 — platforms, crowds, the horizontal

25Jul09

There is something distasteful about the very bustle of the streets, something that is abhorrent to human nature itself.  Hundreds of thousands of people of all classes and ranks of society jostle past one another; are they not all human beings with the same characteristics and potentialities, equally interested in the pursuit of happiness? . . . And yet they rush past one another as if they had nothing in common or were in no way associated with one another.  Their only agreement is a tacit one: that everyone should keep to the right on the pavement, so as not to impede the stream of people moving in the opposite direction.  No one even bothers to spare a glance for the others.  The greater the number of people that are packed into a tiny space, the more repulsive and offensive becomes the brutal indifference, the unfeeling concentration of each person on his private affairs.

— Friedrich Engels, quoted in Walter Benjamin’s “On Some Motifs in Baudelaire”

  1. Great photos! I love the Dobutsuen-mae Station shot.

  2. 2 Trane DeVore

Daniel — Thanks! I love that station. The whole wall is covered with zoo animal images. One day when I’m feeling especially motivated I’d like to do a whole series involving all the animals. Maybe I can get some friends to wear crazy masks or something.
